Stay Mindful in the Office: High-Voltage Power Safety

Is Your Office Safe From High-Voltage Power?

Electricity powers our offices and homes, providing a source of energy to our daily bustle. While we often don’t pay mind to the surge of electricity constantly circulating around us, it’s wise to take a step back and think about safety. Is your office prepared for an electricity failure? Do your employees know how to remain safe around high-voltage power? At Apollo Electric, we are long-time experts in electrical safety and wanted to offer our clients a few tips.

What is High-Voltage Power?

The term “voltage” describes the difference in electrical potential between two points. A high-voltage power supply is a power conversion circuit that converts low voltage potential into high voltage potential. Once a voltage reaches about 62Vdc, safety hazards are much more prevalent. In short, high-voltage power is anything that has the potential to cause severe harm.

Safety Tips

High-voltage power typically exists in only one part of an office or home – the interconnection between your space and the main power grid. Most people won’t come into contact with high-voltage power, but if you do, there are some precautions you should take.

  • Ensure that only authorized employees work around the high-voltage supply.
Employees that are not well-versed in electrical configurations should not attempt to manipulate any power supplies. The best safety precaution is to leave the high-voltage power problems to the professionals.
  • Label high-voltage entrances and all related equipment.
If your office has a supply of high-voltage power in an easily accessible place, be sure to appropriately label the entryway. You don’t want unaware employees wondering into the volatile space.
  • Display emergency shutdown instructions.
Be sure to include a detailed shutdown guide, complete with relevant phone numbers to call in the event of an emergency. If your team works in a medical office, chances are high-voltage systems could interfere with other electricity within the office. Ensure your employees know the proper precautions to take.

While it’s unlikely that your team will encounter a high-voltage power emergency, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
